We will begin the day by picking up passengers from their respective accommodations at around 4:00 a.m. After a 2-hour drive, we will arrive at the town of Mollepata, where we will make a short stop of 30-45 minutes for breakfast. We will continue to Soraypampa, where we will start hiking to the highest point of the entire route: the Salkantay Pass (4,650 meters above sea level), through a rocky and steep trail (7 km/3 hours). This section will require the physical endurance of passengers, as well as good acclimatization. At this point, we will take a short break while enjoying incredible views of the snowy Salkantay. Then, we will descend to Wayraqmachay for lunch, and continue hiking for 2.5 hours until we reach Chaullay, where we will spend the night in the Andean Huts camp.
At 6:00 a.m., we will begin our journey (17 km/6 hours) towards the small settlement of La Playa. On the way, we will enjoy the lush landscape: rivers, waterfalls, wild orchids, and coffee, banana, avocado, passion fruit, and granadilla plantations. We will also pass through the town of Collpapampa, also known as the top of the cloud forest. After lunch at La Playa, passengers will be transported by vehicle to the Hydroelectric plant. From there, passengers will continue for 3 hours on the train tracks towards the town of Aguas Calientes, where we will stay overnight in a hotel.
After a restful night’s sleep at the hotel, we will wake up very early to head to the archaeological complex of Machu Picchu with the intention of arriving before most tourists. After the tour, passengers can climb Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain. For this, it is necessary to book tickets in advance. The time it takes to climb and descend either of these mountains is approximately 3 hours. A less demanding option that does not require extra tickets is the hike to the Sun Gate. This journey takes between 2 and 2.5 hours round trip. Another interesting option is to walk to the Inca Bridge. Our travelers can enjoy the citadel of Machu Picchu for over 7 hours before returning to the town of Aguas Calientes. Finally, we will board the return train to Ollantaytambo (2-hour journey), where transportation to Cusco will be waiting to take passengers to their respective hotels.
