Choquequirao is a lost city where the Incas took refuge from 1536. Located in the Vilcabamba Valley, province of La Convencion, in the rainforest at 3300 meters above sea level. This archaeological site is considered as important as Machu Picchu. The journey starts in the city of Cusco. After 145 km of paved road and 10 km of dirt road, we arrive at the town of Cachora, where the 32 km trail begins, surrounded by impressive landscapes. Along the route, we can also appreciate the flora and fauna of the Apurimac Canyon, the deepest in the world, until we reach the “Golden Cradle” of the Incas.
At the indicated time, we will pick you up from your hotel to start the journey towards the town of Cachora, located at 3,400 meters above sea level. In this place, we will stop for breakfast (not included). Then, we will continue our journey through Andean landscapes until we reach the Capuliyoc viewpoint, located at 2,900 meters above sea level. From this point, we can see the Inca city of Choquequirao in the distance and the stunning view of the Vilcabamba mountain range. We will continue our descent until we reach our first stop in Chikiska, located at 1,800 meters above sea level, where we will have our lunch. After lunch, we will continue the descent until we reach the Rosalina beach, located at 1,500 meters above sea level. Then, we will continue ascending until we reach our campsite in Santa Rosa Baja, located at 2,100 meters above sea level, where we will have our dinner.
After breakfast (5:00 am) we will continue our adventure, this time ascending to Santa Rosa located at 2100 meters above sea level. After a brief rest, we will continue the trail until we reach Maranpata located at 2800 meters above sea level. There we will have our lunch to regain energy and continue to our second campsite in Choquequirao, located at 3,035 meters above sea level.
This second day hike is considered the most challenging as we will have to cover most of the path uphill.
Early in the morning, after breakfast, we will have our guided tour of Choquequirao, which is an hour’s walk to see the sunrise over Choquequirao while our guide explains about this important Inca refuge. At the indicated time, we will start the return to Chikiska, our third campsite. The route on this third day is lighter, as we will walk the same path as the previous day, but this time in a downward direction.
On this day, we will start our journey very early and head back to Cachora, where we began our hike on the first day. And there we will take our transportation back to the city of Cusco.
